District Meeting in Bamako

2020-2-25 District Mtg (1)

This morning we had our District Meeting with our four wonderful Bamako Elders.  We love being here with them.  We are making good progress here and we are so happy to be here.

2020-2-25 District Mtg (2)

These Elders are great teachers.  Today we got to hear from Elder Kouakou.  We had a great discussion about obedience and how teaching obedience will bless others.

Interesting things in Local Supermarkets

2020-2-24 Market 1001 (1)This morning we went back to the Ghanaian Embassy with our paperwork to get our visas for our upcoming temple trip.  After that, we walked to the 1001 Wonders Supermarket.  This is a great place to shop.  Their prices are good.  Much of the inventory comes from the Middle East rather than Europe.  It’s a very Muslim store, which is interesting in itself.  Here are a few of the things I found interesting to look at as we wandered through the store.

Above:  ground corn, lentils, dry beans, chickpeas, and also several types of rice.

Below:  plastic good are very cheap and used by everyone here.  For example a large dishwashing pan was about a dollar.  These dipping cups were about 30 cents.

The potty pots above are used in every bathroom (instead of toilet paper) and are used for ritual cleaning before prayers.  Everyone has them.

Scratch pads for cleaning the large pots, hot pads made of wood, huge (long) whisks:

Mosquito nets.  The government supplies these to people in the villages.  They’re not very expensive.  Everyone sleeps under a net here, including all of the missionaries.

In the middle of the store is a prayer area where men can go to worship at prayer time:

Teaching the Children — Primary in Bamako

Waiting for Sacrament Meeting to Begin

2020-2-23 Primary (1)

Now that we have a new branch presidency in Bamako, soon we will have callings for these good members.  Right now, aside from the branch presidency and the ward clerk, no one has a calling, so we all just fill in and help where we can.   My favorite place is with the children.  They forgive my French and help me when I don’t know the words.

Today I taught them about the Book of Mormon.  We talked about how we got it and what’s inside it.  I brought pictures and stories and we took turns reading and we learned together.  These children are like sponges.  They feel the good here and they want to know more.

We learned two new Primary songs today:  The Books in the Book of Mormon:

Premier et Second
Livres de Nephi,
Jacob,
Enos,
Jarom,
Omni.
Paroles de Mormon, Mosiah, font le Livre de Mormon.

Alma,
Hélaman,
Trois, Quatre Néphi,
Mormon,
Ether et
Moroni,
Nous connaîtrons bien les prophètes dans le Livre de Mormon.

And we learned the first verse of Book of Mormon Stories:

Dans le Livre de Mormon, on nous conte très bien
L’épopée des Lamanites dans les temps anciens.
En ce pays, leurs ancêtres vinrent de très loin,
Pour y vivre, ils devaient faire bien.

Saturday at the Church: An Audit and A Presidency Meeting

2020-2-22 Bamako (1)

This morning we walked over to the supermarche to buy some fresh baguettes to make sandwiches for our friends at church.  We had a full day of meetings planned.  On the way to the store, we saw the first real garbage truck we’ve seen here.  Usually donkeys with carts pick up the trash in most neighborhoods.  Maybe this store has a special contract since they have so much trash.

Mali has the best bread ever.  I made pepper steak sandwiches with this today for our friends (hamburger meat cooked with onion, red and green peppers and spices).

This is Abram Cosby.  He teaches 5th grade at The American School here in Bamako.  He’s a member of our branch and has been asked to help with the financial audit of our branch records.  John has also been asked to be on an audit committee for the mission to oversee the audit here and in two other mission branches.

President Sekou and Francois also got a bit of training on how to handle the finances here.

If everyone understood how important it is to help establish the church in places like this, people would line up to be missionaries here.  This is the Best Work Ever.  Honestly.  We love what we are doing every single day.

Rose’s Family Prepares for the Temple Trip

2020-2-21 Rose Family Passports paid (1)

This morning we went with Rose’s family to help get their passports for the upcoming temple trip to Accra.  We had to meet at the bank on the other side of the river and pay the fees, now they can go to the embassy to get the the passports.

After that we went to the Ghanaian Embassy to start the work on our visas for the temple trip next month.

The Best Medicine

2020-2-20 John M&Ms (1)

A year and a half ago, we had 3 days to pack things to put into a container going to Mali.  At that time we had hopes of coming ourselves within a few weeks to live here.  When I asked John what he wanted me to pack for him, he said, “M&Ms,”  That was his only request.  I picked up 4 of these large Peanut M&M containers at Costco and packed them along with other essentials I knew we’d be grateful to have here.

John finished off his first jar in 3 months and has tried hard to wait to open the second.  He made it an extra month.  Jar #2 was opened today.  It sat in the container at the chicken farm for more than a year in blazing heat.  The M&Ms survived pretty well.  I wonder how many days this jar will last.

2020-2-20 John M&Ms (3)

As for me, my favorite treat here is plain roasted local peanuts.  John claims there’s a reason why his first mission was in Switzerland (land of chocolate) and my first mission was in Africa!

Back to Bamako!

2020-2-19 Mali from plane (4)

Here’s a look at Mali from the air, as we approached Bamako this afternoon.  It’s a hot, dry, barren land, with good people trying to survive in a hard place.

When we disembarked and entered the airport (both last week and today), we were met by health officials who checked each person’s temperature with a digital thermometer and required us to use hand sanitizer before entering the airport.

Our global world is watching the spread of the Coronavirus and health officials do not want it to come to Africa.

Here is today’s update of this frightening virus.  So far there is only once case in Africa–in Egypt.  We’re told if it comes here, it would be disastrous.

A Special MLC with Elder Nash

2020-2-18 MLC with Elder Nash (1)

This afternoon we had a special Missionary Leadership Council at the Mission Office with Elder Nash, the West Africa Area President, accompanied by Elder John A. Koranteng, an Area Seventy from Ghana who helped with translation.  Here are some of the photos I took while we waited to begin the meeting.

The meeting began just before 4:00.  Prior to the meeting, Elder Nash met with Pres Binene and then with Pres Lewis and me.  He was interested to hear an update about our work in Mali.  He played a huge role in our mission call to serve here.  It was great to see him again.

2020-2-18 MLC with Elder Nash (13)

This meeting was a follow up to meetings held here last month when he visited for Zone Conferences.  Good things are happening in this mission.  His instruction today was to these young missionary leaders, with encouragement to stand with both feet on the Lord’s side.  In counsel, we discussed the culture of our mission and things we can do to make this mission even stronger and better.
